On March 21, 2026, Breathe California began its 116th year of promoting lung health and clean air in the Bay Area and beyond. Breathe California is the organization that evolved from the Santa Clara Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, established in 1911, playing a key role in reducing local TB rates by 60% by the 1930s – even before the availability of antibiotics or x-rays – through outreach, education, and key community partnerships. As new public health challenges have affected the public, we have addressed air pollution, tobacco use and prevention, asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, wildfire smoke, and the current vaping epidemic.
