Federal health officials have announced that their analysis of leading brands of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) found the product to include a number of toxic chemials. The FDA had tested 19 brands of the new products and found that 2 leading brand’s produtcs contained cancer-causing chemicals as well as other toxins, including a key ingredient in anti-freeze.
E-cigarettes emit a nicotine mist that is absorbed directly into the lungs and manufacturers have claimed that their products are healthier alternatives to tobacco use. However, a number of public health advocates have opposed the emergence of e-cigarettes as dangerously unregulated and a potential gateway for youth to start smoking.
Regulators had previously halted 50 imported shipments of e-cigarettes at the border and stated that they are “planning additional activities“ to address the safety issues posed by the products.
