Home > Napa County Summary

General Health

Napa County ranks 5th out of all California counties in the County Health Rankings for Health Outcomes.1 When asked about their health status, 54% of Napa County residents reported excellent or very good.2 However, Hispanic/Latinos and those living below 200% of the Federal Poverty Line had lower proportions3. In Napa County, 90.9% of residents have health insurance, almost 4% more than the rest of California.4 According to the County Health Rankings, 8% of the population under 65 years of age is uninsured. The implementation of the Affordable Care Act/Covered California will likely lower the number of uninsured and future reports should tell us more about the impact on the community.

Lung Health

Approximately 12.2% of Napa County adults are current smokers, compared to 12% of adults in California.6 The Napa Network of Care reports a steady decline in the percentage of adults who smoke from 11.6 % to 8.5% from 2008 to 2012.7 Death rates are lower in Napa County than California as a whole, with lung disease being the second-highest cause of death.8

6.5 % of youth reported smoking, which was higher than the state’s rate of 4.8 %.9

Air pollution from daily particulate matter has remained consistently below that in California but has come close to that of the United States.10 Specifically, in 2011 Napa County had an average of 7.5 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate matter compared to 8.0 in California overall.11 The only places within the county that exceed the county average are American Canyon and a part of Napa, mainly because of transportation and traffic.12

Lung Cancer

When looking at all causes of cancer, incidence rates of lung and bronchial cancer are second only to prostate cancer for both males and females.13 For mortality, the rates follow the same trends when compared to California, but lung and bronchial cancer move above prostate cancer to the leading cause of cancer mortality.14 The age-adjusted mortality rate for lung cancer was 37.5/100,000 persons for 2010-2014, with a decreasing trend since 2004 going beyond the National objective of 45.5/100,00015. However, the rate is still above the California rate of 33.4/100,000 with Napa ranking 43rd out of all California Counties.15

However, when looking more closely, disparities appear. Men have an incidence rate of 54 cases/100,000 persons compared to females with an incidence rate of 46 cases/100,000 persons on latest 5-year average.16

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Napa County ranks 11th in the state with regards to its COPD death rate.17 The age-adjusted death rate due to COPD is 27.4/100,000 population, which is lower than the state’s death rate of 33.3/100,000.18

Asthma

According to the California Health Interview Survey, 26.7 % of Napa County residents have been diagnosed with asthma, more than the 14.8 % in all of California.19 Luckily the rates for hospitalizations and ER visits due to asthma in Napa County have consistently been lower than that in California.20 In 2016, the Napa County hospitalization rate was 2.1/10,000 compared to California at 4.8/10,000.21

Within Napa County disparities do appear. The majority of emergency room visit rates from asthma occur in those 4 years and younger (68.1/10,000).22 Women also have a higher ER rate than men with a rate of 34.4/10,000 vs 32.3/10,000.23 Significant differences appear among race/ethnicity. Black/African-Americans have an ER rate of 101.8/10,000, which is considerably higher than among White/Non-Hispanics who have the next-highest ER rate of 35.6/10,000.24

Tuberculosis

There weren’t any reported cases of tuberculosis in Napa County in either 2013 or 2017.25

Influenza and Pneumonia

Influenza and pneumonia are the 27th leading causes of death in Napa County with an age-adjusted death rate of 13.2/100,000. This rate has decreased over the last ten years and is still slightly lower than the rate of 15.2/100,000 seen statewide.26
