Asthma Management Facilitator
If you have ever wanted to get involved in helping educate children, this is the volunteer opportunity for you! Our asthma management program teaches asthmatic children how to manage their asthma. We are looking for volunteers to facilitate the asthma education sessions in school distrcits within Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. The program consists of six 40- minute sessions. Every year in August, Breathe California hosts a week long day camp for asthmatic children. The purpose of the camp is to teach the children how best to manage their asthma and to give them the opportunity to participate in fun activities as well as be together with other children suffering from asthma. At the beginning of October, Breathe California holds its annual 5K Breath of Life Walk. For this event, we need volunteers to help with set-up and break-down, with distribution of refreshments, route monitoring, registration and much more. We are also looking for volunteers interested in getting a team together of friends and family to collect pledges for asthma research and programs, as well as walk in the Breath of Life Walk. We are always looking for volunteers interested in assisting us with general office support such as creating Word & Excel documents, filing, copying, doing data entry, bulk mailings, and stamping literature. Volunteers may be trained to answer phones.Health Fair Assistant
We are looking for volunteers interested in representing Breathe California at health fairs. The fairs are held at places like colleges, community agencies, and corporations. Volunteers will staff a booth from which they will distribute literature as well as promote our agency’s programs and services.Tobacco-Free-Campus Advocate
We need volunteers to advocate smoke-free college campuses. Some of the tasks would be to observe that no violations are committed, set up new signs, conduct surveys, conduct smoking and health presentations, meet with campus officials, recruit other college students, and facilitate youth programs. The Better Breathers Club is a monthly support group for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). We are looking for a volunteer to assist with the following tasks: recruit professional guest speakers, maintain a current schedule of the monthly BBC sessions, call BBC members to remind them of upcoming meetings, introduce guest speakers to BBC participants, expand and maintain a current list of potential speakers and participants, and gather stories as well as testimonials from BBC members to be published in the BBC newsletter. Smokeless Saturday is a class for minors that have been cited for the possession of tobacco paraphernalia. In lieu of paying a fine, the minors can opt to take this five-hour class, which is always on the last Saturday of each month. The class teaches minors about the hazards of smoking. We are looking for volunteers to facilitate the Smokeless Saturday classes. Training will be provided. Volunteers have to be 18 years of age or older. Counseling Leadership Against Smoking Pressures (CLASP) is a smoking prevention program that trains high schoolers on how to teach middle schoolers about the hazards of smoking. We are looking for volunteers to assist the CLASP Program Associate in facilitating high school peer mentor trainings, transporting high school students to and from local middle schools, observing and supporting peer mentor sessions in middle school classrooms, evaluating pre and post surveys as well as student and teacher evaluations. Volunteers have to be 18 years of age or older and available during school hours.
