Quit the Hits

Quit the Hits is a smoking cessation program designed specifically to help high-risk youth cut down or quit the habit. It is estimated that close to 80 percent of high-risk teens (which includes incarcerated, sheltered and alternative school youth) smoke. The Quit the Hits program is designed to help these youth address their addiction, reduce their tobacco use and ultimately kick the habit.

What happens in the class?

The class is made up of five one-hour sessions. Each session utilizes a number of visual aids including videos, posters and demonstrations to help students understand the dangers of smoking. The interactive class’ curriculum is designed for young people who might not have thought about cutting down their smoking or quitting. Throughout the five sessions, they learn why people start smoking, continue smoking and what they can do to change this behavior. The class offers tips to avoid situations where they might be tempted to smoke and advice on how to deal with cravings.

Benefits

Teens leave the class with numerous resources and extensive information about smoking. In addition to understanding the consequences of smoking and the reasons why they smoke, participants have the knowledge and tools to help them cut down on their smoking and/or quit altogether.

How successful is the program?

The reason the program is successful is because the students are not only given tools to quit or cut down, but they also learn how their smoking affects other people.
