School-Site Asthma Education
If
left unchecked, asthma can lead to frequent hospital visits, greater school
absenteeism, and low self-esteem and confidence. A strong desire to “fit
in” with their peers also leads many children to ignore simple ways
to manage their disease. To combat this, Breathe California offers on-site
education for students affected by asthma.
The Curriculum
Breathe California's School-Site Asthma Education is broken down into 45-minute sessions that take place once a week over a six-week period. The curriculum, which can be tailored for either elementary or middle school students, utilizes a variety of techniques to help children understand and manage their asthma. Through a variety of interactive activities and open discussions, the children learn to:
- Recognize the triggers of asthma attacks
- Avoid asthma attacks
- Understanind how/when to take medication
- Manage asthma symptoms in different environments
- Support their asthmatic peers
Our trained facilitators help create a fun and suitable learning experience. In addition, the class aims to reach parents through take-home handouts and assignments that seek to engage parents in the educational process.
Benefits of School-Site Asthma Education
By participating in a school-based asthma education program, children develop a better understanding of asthma, learn strategies to better manage their condition and are better equipped to confront their chronic illness. As a result, children often benefit from:
- Better academic performance in the classroom
- Decline in school absenteeism
- Become more attentive to their asthmatic needs
- Increase self-esteem and self-confidence
